Franklin Deleno “Freddie” Martin, age 90, passed away Friday, June 7, 2024 at his residence. Mr. Martin was born in Greenbrier, West Virginia on April 6, 1934 to Ed and Kathleen Sims Martin.
Freddie was of the Baptist faith and a veteran of the United States Air Force. He loved gardening, hunting and fishing, NASCAR racing and blue grass music but above all Freddie loved his family. Freddie was also affectionately known as “the train whistle guy”. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
Survivors include, his wife, Iona Lyon Martin of the home, a daughter, Joyce Martin Shipley of Walkertown, a brother, Billy Martin of Dawson, WVA, a sister, Barbara Martin of Virginia, five grandchildren, Joshua Landon Shipley and wife Haley, Jordan Dale Shipley and wife Megan, Flora Sidden, Radie Sidden, a special granddaughter, Alyssa Wondolowski, two great-grandchildren, Bryson James Shipley, Bently Joe Shipley.
A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at 2pm at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. John Attaway officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to The Ark in Elkin.
