Mr. Gayland Dale Bates, age 68, of State Road passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at his home. Mr. Bates was born June 28, 1950 in Surry County to Corina Bates Billings.
Mr. Bates attended Welcome Home Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired car dealer. Mr. Bates loved playing softball, playing several years with Cockerham’s Road Runners, and his hot rod cars, but most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother Earl Kamil Akbas and grandparents, Tom “Peg” Bates and Nellie Eldridge Bates.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 50 years, Nancy Lorene Bates of the home; sons, Todd Bates and wife Daniyel of State Road, Scottie Bates and wife Shannon of State Road, Steven Hinson and wife Kelly of State Road; daughters, Robin Roland and husband Robert of State Road, Wendy Hamby and husband Chris of State Road; brother Turk Akbas and wife Susie of State Road; brother-in-law, Don Bell and wife Lola of Elkin; grandchildren, Teresa Pyrtle, Chris Adams, Ashley Walsh, Shane Hinson, Parker Bates, Gracie Bates, Matt Bates, Sammy Hamby; great grandchildren, Makensie Walsh, Tucker Adams, Brady Pyrtle; several nieces and nephews; and a very special aunt, Jackie Bates Holbrook.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Danny Royal and Rev. Jerry Sparks officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice for their care.
