Gerald Evans

Gerald Gene Evans, 89 of Jonesville, was born Oct. 14, 1931, at his grandparents’ home in Surry Co., NC, the second son of Hubert and Ila Layne Evans of Center Road.  He retired from Hanes Knitting (Sara Lee) in 1993 after 41 years of service.  After his retirement, he could be found most mornings at either McDonald’s or Terry’s Café where all the important business of retired men was discussed around a table and over a cup of coffee.  Gerald was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and most recently a faithful attendee of Grace Bible Church of Yadkinville.

In June of 1995, he began his second and most important career of being a Pa to his beloved grandson.  He never missed a ball game or a practice and was never happier than when he was spending time being a grandfather and the #1 fan of Troy and his friends, who were all like grandsons to him.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law, C.R (Velt) and Ruby Cox of Traphill, two brothers, Bobby Joe and Wilbur Evans, and one sister Frankie Evans Blackburn.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruth Cox Evans of the home, his daughter Lora Layne Evans of Jonesville, his grandson and best friend, Troy Layne Evans and wife Lindsay, and his new great-grandson, Hunter Layne Evans, all of Leland, NC.  Also surviving are brothers Edward Evans, Allen Evans and wife Connie, sister Katie Evans Shockley and husband Homer, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley Cox King and Billy Cox, as well as a large, extended family and loving friends.

Due to Covid concerns, a private memorial service will be held for family and close friends on Sunday, August 29 ^th , 2021, at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Boonville, with burial to take place at Union Baptist Church, Traphill, NC. Mr. Evans will lie-in-state Saturday, August 28, 2021 from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.
