Mrs. Helen Billings Phillips Cockerham, age 93, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at Dunmore Plantation in Dobson. Mrs. Cockerham was born February 28, 1929 in Wilkes County to Chester B. Billings and Maye Absher Billings.
Mrs. Cockerham was a member of Oak Level Baptist Church and retired from Lucia. In the 1960’s she started her own sewing business and was a talented and professional seamstress. Mrs. Cockerham was a humble, Christian lady and a Godly and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved everyone she met and was a friend to all.
In addition to her parents Helen was preceded in death by husbands, Charlie McClain Phillips- the father of her children and Arthur Mart Cockerham; daughter, Pamela Caudill; brothers, John Elbert Billings and Hubert Billings; sisters, Mildred B. Burcham and infant sister, Annie Lee Billings; brothers-in-law, Harold Burcham and Charles Jordan; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Billings and Linda Billings.
Survivors include: sons, Jackie Charles Phillips and his wife Sue of Elkin and Steven McClain Phillips of Roaring River; daughters, Brenda Johnson and her husband Sam of Ronda, Violet Phillips and her partner Johnny Wood of Elkin and Andrea Cockerham and fiancé Michael S. Loren of N. Wilkesboro; son-in-law, Garwood Caudill of Roaring River; brother, Donald Billings of Roaring River; sisters, Erlene Poplin and her husband Kenneth of Roaring River, Geraldine Jordan of Roaring River; sister-in-law, Mary Billings; grandchildren, Bradley Johnson and his wife Sandy, Andrew Johnson and his wife Heather, Charles Phillips and his wife Nikki, Brandon Phillips and his wife Maggie, Seth Phillips and his wife Anna, Shane Phillips and his wife Michelle; great grandchildren; Reagan Johnson, Caleb Johnson, Samuel Johnson, Olivia Johnson, Ellie Phillips, Cory Phillips, Hayden Phillips, Katie Phillips, Hallie Phillips, Emmalyn Phillips, Jackson Phillips, Eli Baker, Justin Wayne Sturgill, Sydney Sturgill and Nicole Sturgill.
Mrs. Cockerham will lie –in-state Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday, January 6, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. James Hall and Rev. Keith Wood officiating. Burial following at Benham Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family would like to thank her son, Steve, who served as caregiver for many years, the staff of Dunmore Plantation, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital and CNA Reagan Johnson, great granddaughter for their kindness.
