James Marion Adams (Jim) was born on Concord Church Road in Lewisville, North Carolina, on May 23, 1941. He graduated from East Bend High School in 1959. Jim served four years in the United States Air Force before returning to North Carolina to study at Appalachian State Teachers College, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees. Mr. Adams finished his education at Idaho State University, where he earned his doctorate.
At Appalachian, Jim met the love of his life, Mary Smith (Maggie), and the two were married on August 28, 1965. Jim was a member of Winston Salem Friends Meeting, which he and Maggie attended until they retired to Ocean Isle Beach.
Mr. Adams was a college professor who taught at Northern Virginia Community College, Southeastern Community College, and Salem College before accepting a position at High Point College (University), where he retired after a long and fulfilling career. While at High Point, Jim was instrumental in creating the Evening Degree Program and Graduate Studies for the School of Business. He also taught business law and economics classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Jim was a respected and popular professor whom his students will remember fondly.
Jim loved traveling and enjoyed discovering new places. Whether he was traveling with High Point student programs in Finland and Germany, teaching a semester abroad in Oxford, England, or heading out with Maggie in their beloved RV to explore the country for weeks on end in the summers, Jim relished the journey as much as the destination.
When Jim was not traveling, he enjoyed working in his yard, where he grew a variety of flowers. His favorite thing was to "rescue" plants off the clearance rack and nurture them into beautiful flowers again.
Mr. Adams will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched. His kind and patient manner, his intelligence, his humor, and his ability to give the greatest hugs will never be forgotten.
