James Stevens Holmes Iii

Mr. James “Jim” Stevens Holmes III, age 66, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2023 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.  Mr. Holmes was born December 21, 1956 in Lexington, Kentucky to James Stevens Holmes, Jr. and Dorothy Singletary Holmes.

Mr. Holmes attended Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia.  He worked as a mechanical engineer for various companies in the Atlanta area such as Honeywell.  In his younger years he enjoyed participating in motocross dirt bike racing and weight lifting. He also served in the US Marine Corps.  Jim is most remembered for being such a loving and generous brother and uncle.  He received great joy from continually doing things for his eight nieces and nephews.  From their childhood into their adult years, Jim would think of ways to surprise them with gifts and special things, such as sending pizzas regularly to dorm rooms for those in college.  He generously remembered his family at holidays by blessing them with Honey Baked Hams. The family will miss the hams.  Jim was a cool uncle.

Survivors include: brother, Benjamin Holmes and wife Helen of Traphill; nieces and nephews, Harrison Holmes and wife Alicia, Carter Holmes, Tucker Holmes and wife Rachael, Priscilla Brawley and husband Caleb, Victoria Moore and husband Lane, J. Stovall Holmes, R. Jackson Holmes and B. Ford Holmes.

A funeral service will be conducted Friday, February 3, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Eric Hancox officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will be conducted Monday, February 13, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery in Mt. Airy with full military honors.
