Mrs. Jean Chappell Bryan, age 96, of Elkin, passed away on Monday, August 5, 2024, at her residence.
Mrs. Chappell was born in Surry County on October 3, 1927, to Carl and Hattie Greenwood Chappell.
Aunt Jean, as she was lovingly known by her family, had a long list of talents. After retiring from Chappell Insurance Agency, she filled her time making all of those around her feel special and loved. She was a decadent entertainer who thrived on creating memorable family traditions. As the family historian, she would record these memories so that we could also share them for generations to come. With an unmistakable southern charm, this past beauty queen was known for her style, class and gentleness. Jean was a fervent lover of life who enjoyed reading, music, needlepoint, knitting scarves for her entire family, Carolina basketball and her beloved Black Kat. She will be missed by her family, who adored her in every moment of her life. Jean was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Bryan, brother Ed Chappell, sister Dorothy Bowman, great-nephew Kyle Smith, and her beloved black cat.
Survivors include: nieces Betsy Bowman Smith and husband Alfred of Colfax, Cameron Rogatsios and husband Dean of King, Kay Cofer and Ed Jones of Atlanta; nephews Damon Chappell of Elkin, Stuart Bowman and wife Carolyn of Greensboro, great nieces Courtney Smith-Pope, Kelly Helton, Maddie Chappell, Max Rogatsios; great-great nieces and nephews; Carley Pope, Kenley Pope, Jackson Pope, Blakely Helton, Randall Brooks Helton.
