Jerry Quincy Gentry

January 19, 1943 — July 12, 2021

Mr. Jerry Quincy Gentry, age 78, of Elkin passed peacefully to his heavenly home on Monday, July 12, 2021 at Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation. Mr. Gentry was born January 19, 1943 in Surry County to James Quincy and Bernice Luffman Gentry.

Mr. Gentry was a member of State Road Pentecostal Holiness Church and retired from Chatham Manufacturing. Jerry lived most of his life in the Elkin area and was well-known as a genealogist and historian. His memory to recall names, dates, and places was remarkable. He was a very sociable man who loved to become acquainted with practically anyone. Jerry was also a well-traveled person, having driven cross-country several times, visiting acquaintances and kin in many different states. From a young age, Jerry had a love for making music. He was skilled on the guitar, piano, and his special love, the autoharp. He became a minister of the Gospel in the late ‘70s and preached as an evangelist, a pastor, and an assistant pastor. Jerry’s love for the Lord, his family and his country was intense. He also had a great sense of humor which will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cramer Norman Gentry; brothers, James Gentry, Jonah Gentry; brother-in-law, James Royal; and sister-in-law, Mary Florence Norman.

Survivors include: son, David Lee Gentry of Elkin; daughters, Ellen G. Bullin and husband Terry of Ararat, NC, Mary G. Hutchens and husband Tony of Ararat, NC, Linda G. Hines and husband Christopher of Elkin; sister, Becky Royal of State Road; brother-in-law, James Norman and wife Joan of Dobson; sisters-in-law, Barbara Gentry of Elkin, Mamie Teague and husband Charlie of Madison, NC; grandchildren, Hannah Jones and husband T.J., Rachel Knox and husband Josh, Deborah Bullin, Joseph Bullin, Matthew Nelson and wife Brittany, Jared Nelson and wife Maranda; and eight great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, July 15, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Garry Tatum and Rev. Danny Royal officiating. Burial will follow in Zephyr Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Rd., Dobson, NC 27017.

The family would like to thank the many people who cared for Jerry during his failing health, including the staff of Chatham Nursing; Mountain Valley Hospice; and the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. They would also like to thank Brooke Wall, his former caregiver from Bayada, who gave him the love and attention he truly deserved.
