Mr. Joe Blaine Guyer Sr., age 94, of State Road, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.
Joe was born on April 18, 1929, in Surry County to Robert Settle and Gertrude Isaacs Guyer.
Joe was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, a graduate of Elkin High School's class of 1947, and the editor of the first "Elk Antler" yearbook. He furthered his education at UNC Chapel Hill. Joe was a tobacco and cattle farmer and owned and operated a country store, Poplar Springs Provisions & Service, for 20 years. He was a founding board member of Yadkin Valley Bank & Trust, serving on the board of directors for 27 years. Joe was a respected member of Elkin Masonic Lodge 454, with 70 years of service and the honor of being a Master Mason.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Holder Guyer; a son, Joe Guyer, Jr.; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Walton Guyer, Sam Guyer, Jake and Wilma Newman Guyer; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, "Jim" and Walt Golden, Dolly and Jack Sloop, and Jackie Sloop.
Survivors include: two sons, Gilvin Guyer and wife Roberta of State Road, Robert Guyer of State Road; sister, Mary Blevins, and husband Ivan of Rural Hall; sister-in-law, Mary Jane Guyer of Atlanta, Ga., Marlene Guyer of State Road; daughter-in-law, Charlotte Hines Guyer; five grandchildren, Blaine & Kristy Guyer of Raleigh, Paul Guyer of State Road, Carrie & Michael Morrison of State Road, Leslie & Joel Hooper of Elkin, Matthew Guyer of Elkin; three great-grandchildren, Adler Guyer, Belle Guyer, Alisson Morrison; three step-great-grandchildren, Starr Morrison, Victoria Morrison, Avaya Morrison and an very special friend, Imogene Shores Hardy.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, April 19, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Roger Hensley and Rev. Chad Whitley officiating. Interment will follow in the Guyer Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Masonic Children's Home of Oxford, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff of Hugh Chatham Health and Mountain Valley Hospice for their exceptional care and support during this difficult time.
