Laura Craven Overbey

Mrs. Laura Marian Craven Overbey, age 66, of State Road passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Laura was born March 11, 1955 in Guilford County to Carrol Ray “C.R.” Craven and Linda Bolard Brumfield.

Laura was an active member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church and an instructor at Surry Community College. She was a graduate of Oak Ridge Military Academy and Peace College.

Laura loved Jesus and was a bright light in the word. She was a wonderful mother with a big heart, who loved and cared for everyone she met. She always sacrificed and put others first. Laura was the kind of person that jumped in when she saw a problem. Laura opened her home to many people and animals over the years. She served on the board of education for Elkin City Schools. She was a dedicated director of The Ark. So many times Laura went above and beyond for friends, making sure they were cared for when no one else did. When challenges arose she rarely complained and never gave up.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her companion, L.W. “Bill” Wells.

Laura is survived by her son, John Overbey, Jr. of Fuquay Varina; daughter, Marian Ashley Gordon and husband Tyler of Rock Hill, SC; adopted daughter, Tonya Taylor of Warrenton; sisters, Celia Lemble and husband Scott of Durango, CO, Celia Self of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Aideen Gordon, Malin Gordon, Erith Gordon, and Ander Gordon. Also surviving is former husband, John “Bill” Overbey, Sr and her beloved pets Bella Rose and Kissi Face.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Elkin Valley Baptist Church CLC with Dr. Johnny Blevins and Rev. Garry Tatum officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
