Louis Linwood “Yank” Proffitt passed away peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Dunmore Plantation in Dobson. Born in Fluvanna County, Virginia, to Avis Jonson, Louis lived a long and full life marked by passion, dedication, and an unmistakable love for all things automotive.
For more than 35 years, Louis put his exceptional skills to work as a mechanic at Moody’s Garage. His hands and heart were dedicated to the craft of fixing and understanding cars, a passion that fueled both a successful career and a lifelong enthusiasm for racing. Sponsorship from John Boys Barbecue Car Number 88 highlights a spirited chapter of his life when he raced at Friendship Motor Speedway, a period that underscored his deep connection to speed, competition, and community pride. Along with competing on the racetrack, Louis also found joy in go-cart racing and cherished the excitement of coon hunting.
Louis was preceded in death by his mother, Alvis Johnson.
He is survived by the love of his life, Martha Daye, of the home; Raymond Daye, a cherished figure thought of as a son of Roaring River; his sister, Thelma Wall, and her husband Marvin of Louisa, Virginia.
A graveside service will be held Friday, 2:00 p.m., May 2, 2025, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Newell Hauser officiating.
