Mr. Loyd Donald “Don” Porter, age 90, of Hamptonville, peacefully entered heaven, Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at SECU Hospice Care Center in Yadkinville, surrounded by his family. Don was born on January 18, 1934, in Yadkin County to Loyd Horton and Carrie King Porter. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Don loved life, and lived it to the fullest, embracing every day and adventure without complaint, and yet with gladness. He was always quick to love and support everyone he knew and loved. He enjoyed his time with his treasured wife, family, friends, the outdoors, and NASCAR on TV(very loudly). In years past, he was an avid fisherman, a skilled boater and skier, a passionate gardener and food preserver, and a dedicated member of the Airstream Club, traveling to 49 of the 50 US states.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brothers, Lewis(Margaret) Porter, Gene(Barbara) Porter, and Larry “Chuck”(Joy) Porter; sisters, Ennis(Cecil) Luffman, Reba(George) Saleem, Faye (Jay) Blevins, and Peggy(Thurmond) Ratledge; brother in laws
and sister in laws, Victor ”Bud” (Kay) Cearley, Carl(Lois) Cearley, Jerry Woodie, and Robert “Bob” Gerety.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joyce Porter, of the home; special niece and nephews, Ginger Wagoner and her husband Rodney along with their children, Nathan and Anna; Jeromey Woodie and his wife Sunny; Stoney Blevins and his wife Candace and their children, Spencer(Brenna) Blevins, Cole(Kallie) Blevins, Hannah(Kristian) Stevenson and Emily, Lydia Blevins, Eli Blevins, and Sarah Blevins; Randy Luffman and his children Jolie Luffman and Sarah(Chris) Petkau and Issac; special brother-in-law and sister in laws, Joell Cearley Woodie
of Hamptonville, Joe Cearley and wife Debbie of Jonesville; Kay Cearley Gerety of Broken Arrow, OK; and several other nieces and nephews.
Joyce and the family would like to send special thanks to those who played a part in Don’s care and navigating life’s final picture for Don: Dr. Mary Beth Seegars and her team at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Cancer Center, the nurses and caregivers at Atrium Health-Wake Forest Baptist Cancer Center Intensive Care Unit on the 8th floor, Lynn Shore, and Mountain Valley Hospice-SECU Hospice Care Center of Yadkin nurses and caregivers.
It is important to honor Don’s wishes. Per his request, there will be no service. Instead, we can take a moment to remember him in our own way, cherishing the memories we shared with him.
