Maxine Martin Gentry

Wilda Maxine Settle Martin Gentry, 82, passed away Saturday, June 22, at Salem Terrace Assisted Living in Winston Salem, after an extended illness.

Maxine was of Baptist faith. She enjoyed serving as a church organist and pianist for many years. She retired from First National Bank of Southwestern Ohio.

She was born August 23, 1936 in Surry County to the late Welborn (Web) William Settle and Beulah Shore Settle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Billy Joe Martin, son Billy Randall Martin, sister Elizabeth Settle Whitaker, and brother Johnny Norman Settle.

She is survived by her loving husband Bryce Gentry of Winston Salem, step son Mark Gentry and wife Kim of Winston Salem, step daughter Kim Dezern and husband David of Rural Hall, sister Kay Settle of Elkin, daughter Cindy Thumberger and husband Greg of Ohio, daughter Michelle Martin of Greensboro, son Greg Martin and wife Cindy of Whitsett and daughter-in-law Emily Tran Martin of Houston, Texas.

In addition, she is survived by grandchildren Brian Martin (spouse Amy) of Pennsylvania, Erin Martin (fiancée Jack Curry) of Pennsylvania, Britt Martin (spouse Lee Ann) of Hillsborough, Matt Martin (fiancée Jessica Barbee) of Burlington, Jacob Thumberger (spouse Sara) of Minnesota, Tim Phelps of Troy, John Lyons of Jonesville, Chris Lyons of Ohio, Daniel McIntosh of Ohio, and Tyler Rice of California.

Surviving great-grandchildren are AJ Thumberger of Minnesota, Natalie Thumberger of Minnesota, Jack Martin of Hillsborough, Ty Martin of Pennsylvania, and Zachary Fry (spouse Lindsay) of Pennsylvania. Surviving great-great grandchild is Presley Fry of Pennsylvania.

The family will receive friends at Elkin Funeral Services, 560 Highway 268 West, Elkin, NC on Thursday, June 27, at 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the same location. Dr. Danny Dodd from Pleasant Hill Baptist Church will conduct the service. Burial will immediately follow the service at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, located just 3 miles away at 593 Pleasant Hill Drive, Elkin, NC.
