Michael Dale Cockerham

Michael “Mickey” Cockerham, age 79, a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran (1968 – 1969) and a man deeply devoted to his family, was called to his heavenly home on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. 

Mickey was born February 7, 1945, to Blan Doughton and Mae Hayes Cockerham. After many years of hard work, he spent his retirement with his beautiful, devoted, and loving wife of 49 years, Dottie Jester Cockerham, and his fur babies, Dillon and Gracie. Mickey will be remembered for his sky-blue eyes, wisecracks, and jokes. He loved a good prank and enjoyed his walks around the neighborhood, talking to everyone he could. He loved doing crossword puzzles and eating bologna, tomato sandwiches, and Diet Coke.

Mickey’s family and sons were his everything: Justin Cockerham, Michael Cockerham and his wife Angie.

His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Lacie Rae, Mackenzie and Juan, Delabra, Kelyn James, Eddie “Bubba” and Kaitlyn Bobbitt.

He joins his grandparents, father, mother, sister, Sharon Helms, and grandchildren, Dustin and Zach Bobbitt, in heaven.

Many will miss him, but his spirit will live within them forever. We love you, Pa!

A memorial service will be held Friday, January 3, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Ron Houser officiating.

From Vietnam’s Shore

You faced the heat of Vietnam,

With rifle, pack, and steady calm.

Through jungle deep and rivers wide,

Your courage served as strength and guide.

 Each dawn you rose to face the day,

While thoughts of home seemed far away.

Your duty called through rain and night,

As stars lit up the dark with light.

 Their names live on in memory,

The ones who fought across the sea.

A flame that glows with quiet might,

To honor those who shared your fight.

 Rest now with pride, brave and strong,

In peace that you helped bring along.
