Mickey Burleson Carter, age 71, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at his home. Mickey was born November 7, 1950 in Stanly County to Maxine and Mitchell Carter. Mickey was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Mickey was employed by Chatham Manufacturing Company for over 25 years. When he left Chatham, he worked for IBM, sold insurance, and finished his employment years at Piedmont Medical as a salesman and shipping clerk. Mickey was very involved within the community. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Elkin where he taught Sunday school, served as Chair of the Deacon Board, was a member of the Baptist Men, was a member of the newspaper collection crew, and served on many other committees. He coached TBall to Little League for more than 15 years through the Elkin Park and Recreation Department, and was coach of the Elkin Middle School baseball team for two years. He was a former President of the Elkin Athletic Foundation. He was a great lover of the outdoors. He grew up quail and dove hunting with his father and he also developed a love of duck hunting. He loved fishing and he loved teaching his grandchildren how to fish and taking them fishing. He loved to play tennis, pickleball, and was a NC State Wolfpack fan.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Judy Carter Hearne.

Mickey is survived by his wife of 49 ½ years Judy Burleson Carter. He has two sons, Christopher Michael Carter and his wife Jennifer of Oak Ridge, NC, and Matthew Burleson Carter and his wife Justine of Trinity, NC, and a daughter, Amy Carter Atkins and her husband, Sam of Fort Worth, TX. Mickey was blessed with four grandchildren, Ella, Mason, Ben and Jackson and two step grandchildren, Ella and Cabe. Mickey has two brothers-in-law, Michael Burleson and his wife Claudine of Lake Tillery, and Lyndell Hearne and his wife Jahala of Hampstead, NC. He also has two nieces, Katie Burleson Womble and husband, Seth of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Braden Burleson of Hilton Head, SC.

A memorial service for Mickey will be conducted Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Elkin. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. The family asks that individuals wear masks and practice Covid protocol. The service will be broadcast live on First Baptist Church of Elkin Facebook page.

Because of his great love of Pickleball, memorials may be made to the Elkin Parks and Recreation Department, PO Box 345, Elkin, NC 28621, for the future Pickleball Courts. Please be sure to designate the memorials to be applied to the future Pickleball courts.

The family would like to thank Mountain Valley Hospice and the following individuals who helped take care of Mickey; Kenneth Stockton, Sally Scales, Paulette Norman, Alisha Jenkins, Jo Ann Johnson, and Terre Haynes. We are also so blessed with a very loving and supportive church family and community who reached out to the family in so many ways through cards, food, visits, and most of all with love, prayer and support during Mickey’s time of illness and passing.
