Nancy Collins Moran Hurst

Mrs. Nancy Collins Moran Hurst, age 82, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Baptist South Community Hospice, with her devoted husband by her side.

Nancy was born on August 3, 1942, in Surry County, North Carolina, to Daniel Smith and Virgie Mae Creed Collins. A woman of deep faith and quiet strength, she was a longtime member of San Jose Baptist Church, where she joyfully served as organist and contributed her time to numerous church committees. She also found great joy in helping others celebrate life’s special moments, serving as a trusted and graceful wedding director.

Nancy devoted her professional life to serving others, spending three decades as a travel coordinator for the U.S. military. She retired with high regard from Naval Air Station Jacksonville, where her dedication, reliability, and kind spirit left a lasting impression.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Roy Cleo Moran; and her brother-in-law, Dock Edward Moran.

Nancy is survived by her loving husband, John Thomas “Tom” Hurst, of the home. Though she had no children of her own, she lovingly embraced Tom’s children as her own: son Darrin Hurst, and daughters Julie Taft, Traci Ange, and Shelly Chehansky. Her greatest joy was being “Mimi” to her beloved grandchildren—Dylan, Ashlyn, Tyler, Christian, Ana, Ellie, Jack, Andrew, Reed, Lee, and Luke —and to great-grandchildren Gabriella, Colton, Kayden, Kyler, and Alyssa.

She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Katherene Moran; She was "Aunt Nancy" to nieces, Cathie Bray (Randy) and Meredith Velasco (Sergio); and great-nephew and niece, Jake (Cassi) and Hannah(Nick), and a great-great niece Jane.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery, 118 North Elkin Drive, Elkin, NC 28621.

A funeral service will be held at Elkin Valley Baptist Church in the sanctuary on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Johnny Blevins and Dr. Stephen Robbins. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
