Rosa Furr

Mrs. Rosa Lee Propst Furr, age 105, of Elkin passed away Monday, December 14, 2020 at Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation. Mrs. Furr was born May 17, 1915, one of nine daughters, to George Garland Propst and Emma Rosa Sigmon in Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina. Paternal grandparents were Davis Franklin Propst and Sarah Witherspoon and maternal grandparents were Emmanuel I. Sigmon and Margaret E. Setzer.

Rosa married William T. Furr on December 16, 1933 in Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina. She has four surviving children, Phyllis A. Stone, Joel David Furr, Tonia Gwyn Hamlin, and Cathy Lavon Furr.

Rosa was a devoted wife and mother, raising her children in a loving family atmosphere. When husband W.T. was called by the Holy Spirit to preach the Gospel of Jesus, Rosa encouraged him to prepare by furthering his education at Wingate College. Rose then became a very supportive minister’s wife, participating in church activities and willingly moving to each new church location where Rev. Furr was called to preach. These included pastorates in North Carolina, Texas, and Louisiana.

Rev. W.T. Furr passed away suddenly on March 6, 1978, leaving a void in Rosa’s life and leaving her to remodel a house they had purchased only one week earlier. Rosa continued participating in all church activities as the preacher’s widow at Pleasant Hill Baptist church and proudly maintained her home and yard on North Bridge Street in Jonesville. She loved her friends, her church, and her home.

Mrs. Furr is survived by nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and twelve great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Dr. Danny Dodds officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Furr will lie-in-state Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Carol Macemore who cared for Rosa as if she were her mother by providing companionship, encouragement, and assistance in Rosa’s later years. We would also like to thank Pleasant Hill Baptist Church for their support and prayers. Dr. Soos and the staff of Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation are to be commended for the excellent care and compassion given to Mrs. Furr.
