Ruth Evans

Mrs. Ruth Cox Evans, age 84, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully at home on June 21, 2022.  She was born February 21, 1938 to the late Conley “Velt” Cox and Ruby Smith Cox of Traphill, NC who met her at Heaven’s gates for a joyous reunion.  She graduated from Traphill High School and then from Davis School of Nursing.  Ruth dedicated 50 years to caring for patients of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, and then to countless friends, family and neighbors after her retirement.  Ruth was a force to be reckoned with when it came to advocating for her patients, and she served as a great mentor to many young nurses whom she had the pleasure of working with.

She married Gerald Evans who preceded her in death in August, 2021. She was a loving mother and grandmother to her only daughter, Lora Layne Evans of Jonesville, her grandson, Troy Layne Evans and wife Lindsay of Leland, NC and her great-grandson, Hunter Layne Evans.

Ruth was an avid and competitive golfer who enjoyed many years playing with the ladies team from Cedarbrook Country Club.  She loved growing her flowers, feeding her birds, and most recently tending to an unnamed cat or two.  Ruth enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends but her most treasured time was spent being a loving mother and grandmother.

In addition to Lora, Troy, Lindsay and Hunter, she will be mourned and missed by her sister, Shirley Cox King of Hamptonville, brother Billy Ray Cox of Traphill, brother and sister-in-law Allen and Connie Evans of Jonesville and Katie and Homer Shockley of Rural Hall, many nieces, nephews and cherished friends.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Union Baptist Church in Traphill with Rev. Junior Thompson and Rev. Steve Stoltzfus officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service.
