S. D. Tharpe

Mr. Sheridan Dean “S.D.” Tharpe, age 91, of North Wilkesboro passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at the Veteran’s Nursing Center in Salisbury.

Mr. Tharpe was born September 2, 1931 in Wilkes County to William Freeland Tharpe and Bretta Poplin Tharpe.  He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and a veteran of the U. S. Army.  Mr. Tharpe was a poultry farmer for over 45 years with Holly Farms and Tyson. He was also a charter member of the Shepherds Crossroads Fire Department where he has served since 1975.  He loved to garden, fish and watch NASCAR.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Tharpe and his second wife, Edna T. Tharpe; son, Sidney Dean Tharpe; brothers, David Tharpe, Sam Tharpe and Loton Tharpe; sisters, Lorraine Tabor and Margaret Poplin.

Survivors include: his son, Tim Tharpe and wife Debbie of Roaring River; daughter, Donna Bryant and husband Tim of Roaring River; brother, Felix Tharpe of Elkin; sisters, Nancy Guiton, Bretta Mae Hayes and Helen Porter; grandchildren, Miranda Garris and husband Vee, Kris Tharpe, Heather Sidden and husband Josh; great grandchildren, Clint Garris and wife Samantha, Mary Garris, Madeline Garris, Seth Tharpe, Luke Tharpe and Brayden Sidden; great-great grandchildren, Gatlin Garris and Emory Garris; special friend, Pat Billings.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, August 5, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church with military honors provided by North Carolina Army National Guard and the Yadkin VFW Post with  Rev. Mike Smith, Rev. Joel Blevins and Rev. Earl Dowell officiating.  The family will receive friends 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.
