Mr. Walter “Ted” Carter, age 84, of Roaring River passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Carter was born March 17, 1937 in Wilkes County to George Franklin Carter and Wanza Cockerham Carter.
Mr. Carter became a member of Oak Level Baptist Church in 1959, where he served as choir director from 1968 -2020 and Sunday school superintendent for many years. He was a retired farmer and member of the Wilkes County Soil and Water Conservation District for 36 years. Mr. Carter served on the board of the Shepherds Crossroads Fire Department from 1977-2020 and served as board president from 1984-2020. He served as treasurer on the board for Clingman Medical Center for 20 years. Mr. Carter enjoyed serving his church and community and loved farming. He left a family that he loved and a family that loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Barry and Betty Carter.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 65 years, Shirley B. Carter of the home; sons, Tony Carter and his wife Nita of Roaring River and Terry Carter and his wife Brenda of Ronda; brothers, Larry Dean Carter and his wife Molly of Elkin and George F. Carter, Jr. and his wife Linda of St. Louis; sister, Jean Dyar of Elkin; grandchildren, Alex Carter or Roaring River, Christy Mathis of Kernersville, Kendra Longworth of Maryville, TN, Tonya Forrest of Morehead City, NC, Elizabeth Carter of Ronda; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Level Baptist Church with Preacher Keith Wood, Pastor Mitch Smith, and Rev. Mattie Ponce-de-Leon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Oak Level Baptist Church.
