Mr. Charles Thomas “Tommy” Wheeler III, age 73 of Elkin, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2022 at his home following a long illness. Tommy was born August 6, 1949 in Wake County to Charles Thomas Wheeler, Jr. and Sarah Marie Holt Wheeler.
Tommy was a member of Elkin Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and a member of the church Choir. He served with the Elkin Fire Department with 41 years of service and 21 of those years as Fire Chief as well as a magistrate for Surry County with 26 years of service. Tommy was a member of the Elkin Masonic Lodge #454 AF&AM where he served as past master, a charter member of the Elkin-Jonesville Shrine Club and a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason. He served as an Elkin Town Commissioner and as a board member of the Yadkin Valley Sewer Authority.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Patterson Wheeler.
Survivors include: his daughter, Sarah W. Martin and her significant other Brian Bryant of Elkin; stepsons, Shane Wilkins of Yadkinville, Dustin Wilkins and his wife Tonya of Elkin; brother, John Wheeler and his wife Cheryl of State Road; sister, Donna Wilkins and her husband Winfield of Springfield, TN; grandchildren, Jessica Luffman and her husband Jason, Eric Martin, Lakan Wilkins, Cass Wilkins, Kali Bailey and her husband Daniel, Walker Wilkins and his wife Deah; great-grandchildren, Layla Bennett, Weston Wilkins; special friend and companion, Darlene Templeton; special friend, Jane Hendrick; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Elkin Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bill Johnson and Rev. Steve Snipes officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Narthex.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Elkin Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, 151 Hillcrest Dr., Elkin, NC 28621.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice, Elkin Fire Department, and Elkin Rescue Squad for their care and support during Tommy’s illness.
