Mrs. Violet Cockerham Smith passed away peacefully late Monday evening, at the age of 96, in the presence of family, as a beloved friend, Great-Grandmother, Grandmother, Mother, and Wife. Violet can be remembered for working at Chatham Manufacturing Company, the Elkin High School Cafeteria, and later, Smithey’s Department Store in downtown Elkin. Violet truly lived life to the fullest through the simple pleasures of family; cool breezes on hot afternoons, under a giant pin oak tree; snapping green beans, before dinner, out in the yard; giving the best hugs, ensuring everyone knew how much they were loved; and vacationing with the family at the beach. Violet is survived by her son-in-law, David Burnette; three grandchildren: Laura Hardin and her partner Doug Hawk, Melissa Brown and her husband Daniel Brown, and Curtis Burnette and his wife Cassie Burnette; six great-grandchildren: Brayton Hardin, Lauren Brown, Hayes Hardin, Isabelle Simmons, Colton Brown, and Elijah Burnette. Violet is predeceased by her husband, Curtis W. Smith and daughter, Geraldine S. Burnette. Flowers will be accepted, or donations can be made to the charity of your choice, as Violet had deep ties to many causes, including the American Lung Association and the American Association for Cancer Research. A graveside service will be conducted Thursday, May 13, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Crestwood Memorial Gardens.
