William Montgomery Smoot

Mr. William Montgomery Smoot, age 75, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2024 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.

William was born August 31, 1948 in Surry County to Capp and Berlene Mathis Smoot. He was a member of Billings Hill Baptist Church.  He enjoyed feeding the deer, birds, camping, fishing and hunting and he loved his family, especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Audrey Smoot; a brother, Archie Dewitt Smoot and a granddaughter, Brenda Stanley.

Survivors include: his wife, Barbara J. Smoot of the home; sons; Teddy Smoot and his wife Rose Mary of Jonesville, Dennis Smoot and his wife Terri of Elkin; daughters, Cindy Smith and husband Michael of Harmony, Michelle Shore and husband Bradley of Roaring River, step-sons, John Williams and wife Deborah of Elkin, Greg Williams of Hamptonville; brother, Lanny Mathis and wife Debbie of Lewisville; special nieces and nephews, Sharon & Johnny Clifton, Glenda & Mike Driver, Tammy & Steve Rinehart, Robin White, Glenn Bracken; 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and several loving cousins.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, June 27, 2024 at 12 noon at Elkin Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. James Hall officiating.  The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 prior to the service. Interment will follow at Benham Baptist Church Cemetery.
